Award Winner exhibition review

by Flóra Gadó

Press release:
Chimera-Project’s next exhibition, opening on the 1st October presents Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair, winner of the second Chimera Art Award, together with Anu Vahtra, winner of the accomplished Köler Prize.

We invite the artists as well as the jury members to the exhibition in order to encourage the dialogue between the Hungarian art scene and the international artists. Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair, Fabian Schöneich, Spengler Katalin and Nicola Trezzi will be at the opening on the 1st of October in person.

On the 3rd of October, 4 pm we organize a special guided tour where the artists will be present. This will be the occasion where Anu Vahtra will present her new artist book "Untitled".

There are several parallel motives between the works of Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair and Anu Vahtra which could add another layer to the exhibition. The two artists not only share in common a similar biography – as both of them were born during the socialist period in an ex-soviet country and they studied and live abroad – but they share interest in rethinking the modernist tradition as well as a continuous awareness towards architecture and urbanism. They engage deeply with the past and history of a specific place/environment, focus on current socio-political questions and use research based artistic methods.

Shapiro-Obermair and Vahtra create minimalistic installations often with a conceptual background, and even though their influences and approaches are similar the end result shows two distinctive oeuvres. The works were selected in collaboration with the gallery, and in Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair’s case a new, site-specific installation will be presented.
