The exhibition “Critical Alliances” would like to question historical perceptions regarding the ideal conditions of artistic production and and how they relate to the working and living situations of contemporary artists. What sort of external circumstances do artists consider as ideal for their self-determined creative activity? What spiritual and psychological incentives are required? What restrictions are perceived as productive potential? Is financial stability a necessary ideal? Should artists desire for the benevolence of the society? And finally, how does the inner dialogue of the artist manifests itself between him/her and the social environment?

During 10 nights there will be spontaneous works and interventions in the unsettled space of the Schneiderei. Only visible from the outside, the enlighted gallery is adressing to the visitors of the „New Bar“ on their way back home. In passing by the casual situation is meant to trigger and slightly shift artistic perception.

As before in the exhibition series UP AND DOWN, SINGLE UNIT HUNTER STYLE and THE QUIET MIDDLE BODY – together with the Portuguese Residency Artist Vasco Costa in July – in LAST ORDERS Wolfgang Obermair want to sound out possibilities of artistic collaboration and to pursue an artistic approach which sees itself as a shaping work on the Schneiderei.

During the first night, on sunday 26^th at 11.30 pm, additionaly the music film SPACE IS THE PLACE by Sun Ra (1974) will be show in the „New Bar“.

A heterogeneous group (artists, designers, architects) came together to work at Cripta 747 art space. The core: to work collectively. The binder: diversity; the time experienced through the manifold of quotidian habits that become group rituals. It is not about 10 days in Torino; it is about the intrauterine speed balance.

The objective is set: a space of art able to accept the difference, radicalized by every each individual working drive. The works are layers of individualism corrupted by the other, in a collaborative working process. This obtains expression by means of intellectual input or craft, embodied on the working time (cosmological time) different from the contemporary lifestyle.

The show resembles a cadravre exquis, a reacting chain, where chance origins meaning.The viewer is pushed in front of a formless situation – the grotesque against the intellect’s oppression, setting a complexity that demands the use of free associations.

A show is a show is a show is an exhibition where the ways have gain a voice within ethos and its modus operandi, that are meant to remain coherent with their artistic, political and social positions. Torino’s street work remains invisible once created by Torino’s people. They were free and they ought to remain free.

The year of the Hare!¹

Chinese believed that their story was related to the heaven. They called their land Middle Kingdom, which represented the kingdom of heaven. In witch stars were never to be laid. The Emperor (Son of Heaven as it was called) was the mediator between heaven and earth. He knew, by its imperial astrologer, how to identify the seasons’ change, could predict and interpret all the signs of heaven.
It was believed that if the emperor had made a mistake in his predictions, he would loose all the powers conferred to him by nature. Therefore, it was important that his advisers observed and calculated with great precision all the movements of the sky. Beheading was the punishment for his eventual lapses.

¹ The Year of the Hare (1975; Finnish: Jäniksen vuosi) is also a novel by Finnish author Arto Paasilinna. It has been translated into over a dozen languages including English, French, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, German, Italian and Estonian.

Hugo Canoilas: Mural Newspaper
Mural Newspaper is an urban intervention conceived to create a situation where cultural agents attempt to interpellate a specific type of audience: the population of a city as it goes about its daily routine. The space opened up by this gesture is an opportunity for artists, curators, and other cultural agents to present artistic or cultural practices by weaving reference to these sources of creative inspiration into the actual fabric of the city.

Taking its inspiration from the practice of fly posting information during the PREC (Processo Revolucionario em Curso – the term used to designate Portugal’s transition into Democracy during the 70s) and the Chinese dazibao – large posters used as means of popular communication but also protest, the Mural Newspaper is both a poetic action and a weak gesture. It emerges as a quasi-unique object, given the abundance of advertisement in public spaces, whose apparition is fleeting. In this way it enters the imaginary of the city as news of something that happened but no one saw or whose full amplitude cannot be witnessed.

This gesture implies an effort of political engagement in the attempt to divert city dwellers’ time, to interrupt the experience of the given grids we inhabit. This interruption is conducted by offering the capital these practitioners have to offer: intellectual capital to be shared as an active community.

For Mural Newspaper #2 contributors were asked to answer to the title of the exhibition “The days of this society are numbered” – Guy Debord, curated by Miguel Amado. The poster will be shown first at the Abrons Art Center and after the exhibition they will posted in the streets.

Фонд «Общество поощрения художеств» представляет две персональные выставки художников, живущих в Вене: «Параллельные акции 1» Екатерины Шапиро-Обермаир и «Параллельные акции 2» Вольфганга Обермаира. На выставке будут показаны новые объекты и ассамбляжи. Главной темой, занимающей художников, является амбивалентность между созданным и найденным объектом. Их работы не являются скульптурами в традиционном смысле ― они находятся во взаимодействии со всем выставочным пространством, превращая его в тотальную инсталляцию.

В искусстве XX в. одним из моментов синтеза концепции, политически-социальной проблематики и культа материальности стало художественное направление 1960 гг. «Новый реализм», которому удалось объединить противоречия путем демонстрации и рефлексии повседневного предметного мира. Фокус на вещь и ее материальную субстанцию не ограничевает искусства его изобразительной функцией (ретинальное искусство), и в то же время не отрицает значение концепции в искусстве. Вещь говорит сама за себя.

Слово «параллельные» в названии выставок подразумевает не только то, что они проходят в то же время в том же месте. Временные и пространственные рамки гораздо шире. Они включают в себя как сознательное обращение к истории искусств, так и художественный дискурс, проходящий в разных точках нашей планеты.

Wie lässt es sich momentan — nach dem Kollaps des Sowjetsystems und den Wirren der 90er Jahre — als junger Künstler in einer Stadt, die sich weder für zeitgenössische Kunst zu interessieren scheint, noch Unterstützung gewährt, leben und arbeiten?

Die leidenschaftlichen, freundschaftlichen Beziehungen in Intellektuellen- und Künstlerkreisen, die in der Sowjetzeit nicht nur charakteristisch, sondern lebensnotwendig waren, entwickelten sich nach der Perestroika und dem Zerfall des institutionellen Rahmens zur “Tusowka”, einer Kommunikationsform, die der Kurator und Kritiker Victor Misiano als „Folge von Treffen“ und als eine „simulative Gemeinschaft“ bezeichnet. Die Zeit nach der Jahrtausendwende brachte auch innerhalb der Künstlergemeinschaft neue gesellschaftliche Kommunikationsformen mit sich: Soziale Netzwerke und ein Geflecht aus Geschäftsbeziehungen, von denen man meinen könnte, dass sie nur zu einer weiteren Entfremdung beitrügen. Jedoch sind laut neusten soziologischen Forschungen im zeitgenössischen Russland freundschaftliche Beziehungen nach wie vor bzw. wieder von großer Bedeutung. Spezifisch für die russische Kultur ist dabei, dass nicht der einzelne Freund, sondern der Freundeskreis die Lebensumwelt bestimmt.

Das Projekt ArtRaum entstand vor vier Jahren in den Atelierräumen des Künstlers Timofey Caraffa-Corbut im Gebäude der ehemaligen Druckerei Original. Ziel der Initiative war die Schaffung eines unabhängigen Arbeits- und Ausstellungsraumes für junge Künstler. Seit 2008 befindet sich der ArtRaum in einer leerstehenden Wohnung in der Tverskaya Uliza 19, direkt am Puschkinplatz im Zentrum Moskaus. Orte für zeitgenössische Kunst in Moskau sind selten, noch seltener sind nicht kommerzielle und offene Kunsträume wie ArtRaum. Neben seiner besonderen Atmosphäre ist dies wohl der Grund, warum der Raum in der Szene gleichermaßen geschätzt wird. ArtRaum definiert sich dabei weniger über eine gemeinsame künstlerische Programmatik, als über sein soziales Umfeld, den Freundeskreis. Einladungen gelten als Privileg und werden telefonisch oder per Mundpropaganda ausgesprochen, um die Intimität zu wahren. Der Bezug zu den Wohnungsausstellungen des Undergrounds der 70er und 80er Jahre ist nicht zufällig.

Im Ve.sch sind einige Künstler aus dem Netzwerk des ArtRaumes im Rahmen eines Austauschprojektes zwischen der Wiener und Moskauer Offszene zu sehen.

«Квартирная выставка венский антураж» — это первая часть проекта по обмену между некоммерческими выставочными площадками двух столиц: Вены и Москвы. В сентябре 2010 в московском ArtRaum свои работы покажут венские художники. Понятие «Квартирная выставка» или «квартирник» отсылает к выставочному формату неофициального советского искусства 1970—1980х. В последнее время квартирные выставки стали для молодого поколения московских художников не только альтернативой коммерческим галереям, но и динамичными центрами художественной активности. В Вене в прошедшие несколько лет также возникло много так называемых Of Spaces — выставочных площадок, организаторами которых являются сами художники. Их роль в альтернативной художественной жизни города не ограничивается выставочной деятельностью. Для молодых художников они являются неотъемлемой составляющей их социальной реализации и местами художественного дискурса.

В название выставки входит и французское слово антураж, которое оказывается ключевым. В различных языках оно имеет разные значения. Во французском антураж означает непосредственное окружение объекта, подразумевая взаимоотношение между центром и периферией, между предметом и его окружением. В отличие от этого определения, в английском и немецких языках под словом антураж понимается исключительно социальный контекст субъекта. В русском же — это совокупность предметов без четкой иерархии между отдельными элементами. Художников привлекают не только непосредственные значения слова, но и сама разница в его прочтении. Проводя параллели с художественным произведением, восприятие которого так же зависит от изменения контекста, они пробуют сместить целую группу объектов, созданных в биотопе Вена.

The Exhibition presents the results of a research project about the complicated but fascinating relationship between the architecture and socio-political conditions in cities with different types of conflict: Belfast, Beirut, Berlin and Amsterdam. Manchester is the third stop of this touring exhibition which is also an official part of the Manchester Architecture and Design Festival.

The book documents the architecture of the Soviet avant-garde in Moscow and the situation concerning it today. In addition to four essays by controversial Russian authors of the younger generation and a story by N. Aseyev from 1925, the book contains an extensive part of the picture. Central are the types of buildings from the 1920s: workers’ clubs, community kitchens, communal houses, bread factories, garages, public schools. Many of these so-called “construction of the second plan” were rediscovered only recently. The current issue between the preservation and demolition confronts the publication with a complex psycho-gram of a Moscow that never was. The editors provide an insight into the current discourse as a platform for the necessary and, in Moscow, still pending discussion over the architectural heritage and urban areas.

Der Band dokumentiert die Architektur der sowjetischen Avantgarde in Moskau und die heutige Situation. Neben vier kontroversen Essays russischer Autoren der jüngeren Generation und einer Erzählung von N. Assejew von 1925 enthält das Buch einen umfangreichen Bildteil. Zentral sind die Gebäudetypen der 1920er Jahre: Arbeiterklubs, Großküchen, Häuser der Kommunen, Brotfabriken, Garagen, öffentliche Schulen. Viele dieser sog. „Bauten des zweiten Plans" wurden erst vor kurzer Zeit wiederentdeckt. Der aktuellen Frage nach Erhalt oder Abriss stellt die Publikation ein vielschichtiges Psychogramm eines Moskau gegenüber, das es niemals gab. Die Herausgeber geben Einblick in den aktuellen Diskurs, als Plattform für die notwendige und in Moskau noch ausstehende Diskussion über das architektonische Erbe und den städtischen Raum.

ALPHAVILLE ist eine Installation mit Chris Markers Fotoroman "La Jetée"(1962), einer dunklen Geschichte, besessen von Erinnerungen, die sich irgendwo in der Zukunft abspielt. Mit Bildern aus der Vergangenheit wird die Zukunft gezeigt: Passagierflugzeuge, das zerstörte Paris, ausgestopfte Tiere... Fünf Videomonitore auf getarnten Podesten vor, von der Decke hängenden Fahnen, deren Farbigkeit den Schwarzweißfilm unterschiedlich tönt. Die Grenze zwischen den “Videoskulpturen” und Besuchern wird vage. Diese können sich körperlich und innerhalb Markers Film bewegen. Ein Raum des kunstbunkers gefüllt mit zirkulärer Zeit, der Ursache und Wirkung in die Schwebe bringt.

Kuration der Ausstellung "Sergey Bratkov – Menschen im Bunker" im kunstbunker-forum für zeitgenössische kunst e.v. Mit seiner Schau "Menschen im Bunker" wird der russische Künstler Sergey Bratkov einen zugleich umfassenden und detaillierten Einblick in sein breit angelegtes Werk bieten. Wie der Titel der Ausstellung bereits nahe legt, reagiert Bratkov dabei spezifisch auf die besonderen Gegebenheiten des Ausstellungsortes kunstbunker.
Eine der zentralen Grundlagen in Bratkovs Werk bildet schon seit seiner Charkover (Studien-)Zeit der sogenannte Dokumentarismus, eine künstlerische Praxis, die von Literaten und Künstlern im Untergrund betrieben wurde. Heute lotet Bratkov vor allem im Medium der Fotografie aber auch mittels Video und in verschiedenen Installationsformen die Differenz zwischen dem Dokumentarischen und der (künstlerischen) Inszenierung aus. Der Zusammenhang von Wirklichkeit und ihrer Konstruktion steht immer wieder im Mittelpunkt der komplexen Werkgruppen des Künstlers. Diese können etwa die Form der Reportage zitieren oder als poetisch analytische Bilderzählungen konzipiert sein. Er selbst kommentiert dazu: "Das Benehmen eines Fotografen ist immer fragwürdig. Entweder inszeniert er und betrügt, weil Fotografie immer Anspruch auf Objektivität erhebt, oder er beobachtet heimlich und wird dadurch zum Voyeur." Damit steht aber auch der Standort eines jeden Betrachters wieder und wieder zur Disposition.
